Take a look at this magazine repair job I saw today at Lillian H. Smith Public Library, on College Street:
The original face had been cut out, and a photocopied replacement had been taped to the verso of the cover. The tape on the front of the cover is just there for reinforcement, to ensure that no accidental ripping occurs while people are carrying the mag around, or flipping pages.
The sad part is that, from the looks of it, the original vandal struck again after the repair had already been made. Underneath those artfully applied little blotches of white-out were some pretty hateful anti-gay slurs, still just barely visible when I held the mag up to the light.
Regardless, my compliments to the librarian who went to the trouble to do this. It would have been a lot easier just to chuck the issue, or withdraw it. And the craftsmanship here is really superb. Not everyone would have xeroxed a new face for the guy after cutting out the old one.
I'd never even glanced at this particular publication before today, but because of the unusual patch job I sat down and read a couple articles. So fuck you, gay-bashing vandals.
